Art Therapy

It engages the mind, body, and spirit in ways that are distinct from verbal articulation alone. It is used to improve cognitive and sensory-motor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress while honouring individuals’ values and beliefs. It involves visual art equipment such as clay, paper, paints, and other artistic materials to create visual forms of personal expression. 

Art therapy benefits: Imagination/abstract thinking skills, Emotions and self-expression, Sensory regulation and integration, Visual/spatial abilities, Recreation/leisure skills and Developmental growth.

 

Clients are not required to have previous experience or expertise in art.  Output is evaluated more based on symbolic significance than aesthetic value. Sessions involve a free-flow of expression or a guided exercise to release or unblock hidden or repressed emotions.

Yoga Therapy

Yoga promotes self-awareness to make better positive choices and to reduce negative destructive thoughts and emotions that cause stress in our lives. Yoga therapy connects the mind, body and soul working with yoga postures (āsana), breathing (prānāyāma) and meditation techniques, such as such as (yantra meditation) a form of gazing into sacred symbols with a focus point to help still the mind and (ajapa japa) – conscious chanting of a mantra (short word vibrations) in sync with breath and meditation. It brings harmony in the mind, body and soul.

YOGA NIDRA - Yoga Nidra for Adults is a 20 -30min of deep profound relaxation. It is pure energy work using our Prana (energy) to restore the body. Yoga Nidra helps in freeing this reservoir of energy which is trapped in our cells and tissues, without any effort or technique, ultimately healing the physical body, energy body, emotional body and so on. You lay down in Shavasana pose and listen to the words as you are guided for 20 min entering into a Delta brain wave of deep awareness and peace.

Dance -  Expressive Movement

It can bolster communication skills, inspire dynamic relationships and it is commonly used to treat physical, psychological, cognitive, and social issues. It is a path of deep learning awareness and a form of movement meditation.

The elements of nature of Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Ether are introduced as a 15 to 20 min dance sequence. As you travel from element to element you are encouraged to express that element with feeling and movement allowing your body to respond naturally to the music. At the end of the dance sequence you allow your body to lie down resting and integrating the experience. When you are ready you are to sit back up and move into an art activity of drawing or writing to release or express your dance experience as insights may come to you.

Djembe African drums are used with the client to follow a rhythm then encouraged to self-express with a supported beat behind them. It allows the client to flow into a trans state of feeling and expression and to release repressed cognitive thoughts that may have been blocking them from moving on.

Other percussion instruments may be used as well to help achieve the desired effect of energized wellbeing. Music is known to lift people spirits and it is used in a meditation form with a Tibetan singing bowl as well to gently promote relaxation and peace. Benefits of music sound healing therapy include: stress relief, pain relief, improving sleep, lowering blood pressure, stimulating the immune system, reducing depression, balancing and harmonizing the body, sense of upliftment and energy, mood enhancement and relaxed state of being. 

*Drumming instruments like the djembe and other percussion can be used in a session.

Stream of Conscious Writing

It is the conscious experience of an individual regarded as a continuous, flowing series of images and ideas running through the mind.To continuously write words on a page without editing or stopping the thoughts or writing process.

Stream of consciousness writing is to remain in an open and free state of mind so the words can flow onto the page. No grammar or syntax is important. Just to remain in the meditated flow of writing. You can be asked by the therapist to write for 2-5 minutes and then stop to read back what was created. There may be a surprise of what was written or a revelation may occur. A lot of emotion is encouraged to be expressed and to feel uncensored. 

Stream of consciousness writing can be very liberating and freeing of the mind. Once it’s all out you may feel a sense of relief and acknowledgement of what was written.
